Whole Foods vs. Processed Foods

One thing that I immediately noticed when I traveled throughout the small towns in Sicily, was that they did not have processed foods. Everything was fresh, farm to table, or made fresh that day. The second thing that I noticed was how amazingly good everything tasted because it was fresh and made from food that was in its natural state , or what I like to call, “Naturally Occurring.” Over the years, since having traveled there, I’ve tried my best to emulate the “Naturally Occurring” theme in regards to the foods that I eat.
Our culture is the fastest-moving, changing, & all consuming & devouring force in the world. And, companies have answered the need for a fast-paced, on-the-go society with tons and tons of processed food items. The main problem with processed foods is that important vitamins, minerals, & other nutrients are stripped from the item the more times that it is processed. Even fiber and germ are removed, leaving the easier-to-preserve starch. Additives, preservatives, artificial favoring, coloring, and other chemicals are added to the item to give it long shelf life.
In comparison, whole foods are not processed and are ready for our consumption in their natural state. These “Naturally Occurring” foods supply vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, amino acids, & other nutrients that are intact within the food to our bodies when they are digesting and absorbing. These nutrients are vital on a cellular level. They prevent oxidative stress to our cells and prevent damage to our DNA. ┬áMany “Naturally Occurring” foods also contain nutrients that help us to naturally reduce inflammation and that help the body to fight illness and disease.
In recent years, I’ve witnessed more and more clients seeking my services for health-related reasons than ever before. So many of the symptoms and disorders can be linked to the consumption of processed foods on a day-to-day basis. People are missing vital nutrients by not eating whole, “Naturally Occurring” foods. I have especially noticed a change in children who have retained my Nutrition services. While growing, our bodies require more nutrients to strengthen cell structure and our individual DNA codes. Processed foods are not supplying them with the proper amounts of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and anti-oxidants, and are also contributing to excess body fat storage, acidic environments in their bodies, and distention in their digestive tracks due to genetically-modified wheat and other former foods that have been stripped of beneficial nutrients.
All that I can do is urge you to eat as little processed food as possible, and increase your consumption of whole foods. Provide your body with the correct nutrients, and it will thank you with less body fat, more energy, less illness, & more health. Be aware of the foods that you are consuming. And, remember, whole foods go bad quickly because they’re in their natural, non-processed state. A whole food should not have shelf life of months. The old saying, “You are what you eat,” really does have some validity in this discussion. The nutrients are exactly what develop, stabilize, and enhance our cells & DNA. Without the nutrients of whole foods, we are shortening the existence of the human species, altering our genetic code, and leaving ourselves wide open to disease, cellular destabilization, (and eventually extinction.) It’s a long way off, but we’re definitely on the wrong path. Feed your body the correct nutrients in foods that “Naturally Occur” in our world. It’s what we were meant to eat.
